Navigate somewhere without your phone

Safety note: Carry a backup means of contact for emergencies. Start with a destination within walking distance of familiar areas.

Why this exists

Spatial navigation was once a survival skill that shaped hippocampal development. GPS has made it unnecessary. London taxi drivers who navigate by memory have measurably larger hippocampi than the general population. When we outsource wayfinding, we let a core cognitive system atrophy.

The practice

Choose a destination you have not walked to before — a park, a shop, a neighbourhood. Leave your phone at home, or powered off in your bag. Use landmarks, sun position, and your sense of direction. Getting lost is not failure; it is the practice working. Ask a stranger if you need help. Arrive when you arrive.

What to notice

  • 01How quickly does anxiety about being lost arise?
  • 02What do you notice in the environment when you cannot check a screen?
  • 03Does your sense of distance feel different without a map?
  • 04What is the quality of arriving somewhere you found on your own?
"Not all those who wander are lost."
